A to Z Theme 2016

For my 2016 A to Z theme I used a meme that I ran across on the blog of Bridget Straub who first saw it on the blog of Paula Acton. This meme is a natural for me to use on my memoir blog. It's an A to Z concept and it's about me. No research and nothing complicated. I'm given twenty six questions or topics to discuss that are about me.

In April I kept my posts short and uncomplicated. In the midst of it all you might learn a few things about me that you didn't previously know.

Grief (Elements of Memoir)

Grief can be a devastating experience filled with heart-wrenching emotion and even sometimes irrational behavior.   There are many stories related to grief.   The mourning and emptiness created by loss can last for days or even years.   Some deal with grief by withdrawing into a dark sadness of self while others might become tremendously creative and productive in order to channel their feelings.

All of us deal with grief at some point in our lives and can expect more grief in the future.  A memoir about the grieving experience can be the story of what happened before and after the grief-inducing event.  These stories can assist others in facing their own times of grief or give readers something with which to relate in their own lives.

We each have our own way of dealing with grief and each situation of grieving might be different from the next.   In all of times of grief that we experience there are new stories to be told.

Do you have a grieving story to tell others?    Have you seen any unique ways that others have faced their times of grieving?    What positive things can evolve from grief?

Friendships and Family (Elements of Memoir)

A great deal of memoir includes elements of friendships, family, or both.  Then there is the memoir where some aspect of one of these is the focus.  The memoir story might focus on your relationship with a grandparent, a sibling, a favorite aunt or uncle, or even life with your parents.  There are so many great stories to be found within the family.  They can include a wide range of emotions and complications.  The stories can be how a family member helped or hurt you or some event or experience that you shared with them.

Any of these things can also apply to relationships with friends.   Our bonds in friendships can be some of the deepest, most emotional, and longest lasting that we can ever have.   There is wonderful story material to be found in our friendships with others.

When writing about real people and events be sure to seek permission where you feel it is needed and discuss what you are doing with anyone who is still living so that you don't create any bad feeling or even run into any legal difficulties.

If the stories are positive and truthful, your story characters will probably be more than willing to consent to being a part of your story and even help with the research you need to do in helping you to remember the details of the story.

Do you think your family and friends would be willing to be a part of your memoir?   Has anyone included you in the telling of a memoir?    Would you want to be a character of a published real life story?

Education (Elements of Memoir) #AtoZChallenge

School days can provide so much material for memoir.  Most of us spend 12 to 16 years or more in school.  Those who become teachers or work in school-related occupations might even spend their entire careers in schools.   The educational years involving college life, high school days, and earlier times in the system can provide volumes of material for fun and interesting stories.

These stories can involve victories as well as defeats.   Stories of being bullied as well as being the bully.   There are stories about inspiring teachers or the fellow students who where our friends.  The cast of characters in our educational life is huge and the stories are varied.

Some of you may have attended a small school or even a one room school house.  This can be a unique experience to relate to those of us who went to larger schools.   Those of you who attended larger schools might have a grander story to tell.  School stories like any life stories can be highly focused or might provide a bigger picture in which you were a small player.

The stories that involve our education can be dramatic, tragic, funny, or motivating.  We can entertain with these stories or we can provide an education about education.   The years that we attend school can be amazing years or they can be bittersweet years tinged with regrets.  Take advantage of revisiting your school days to remember the stories you have within you.

Were your school days difficult?  Do you have pleasant memories of school?    If you could go back to any of your years in school which would you most want to relive?

Dates (Elements of Memoir) #AtoZChallenge

A memoir is a type of history and thinking from this standpoint we can see how specific dates might be important.   The reader doesn't always have to know exactly when events mentioned in a memoir happened, but it's almost always relevant for the writer to provide a general setting in time for the story.

Some memoirs might deal with specific dates however.   A milestone event in the author's life should in most cases have a date attached to it.  Dating the event gives it greater context in the history of all things as well as a relatable point in time for the readers of the memoir.

There are certain dates of historical significance to which a memoirist might attach personal meaning.  The day President Kennedy was assassinated, the attack of 9/11, or when Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans are examples of dates when many shared an experience and have personal stories to tell related to the event.   Others might have stories to tell about historic events such as a presidential inauguration or a major sporting event.

The dated stories don't have to be necessarily big in scope either.  A story might be about what you and your family or friends did on a particular holiday in a specific year.  It could be a story about a wedding day or a funeral, either which would have a significant date attached to it.

Think about dates in your life that stand out.  There is the story of the day itself as well as the days that led up to that day and the effect in the days after the event.  Dates are just as important to the story as they are to the person relating the story.

Do you typically wonder when something happened in a story you are reading?    When you are telling someone else about something that happened do you include when it happened?   What are some important historical dates that impacted you personally?

Care and Carelessness (Elements of Memoir) #AtoZChallenge

A memoir might be considered to be a "case study" of life.  The memoir story is more than just an accounting of events.   Rather, the memoir digs deep into a part of life dissecting it for the readers and exposing the soft underbelly to often leave the subject highly vulnerable.  This life story examines thoughts, emotions, motivations, and reactions along with the who, what, when, and why of the story.  The case is made and the reader is given a task of being the judge, jury, and analyst when the story delves deep enough.

Many who have cared for aging parents, disabled children, or dying spouses have amazing and often heart-breaking stories to tell readers.   The stories can be filled with many hardships and personal triumphs that can encourage others who face similar life struggles.  Stories of caring can show the best as well as the worst of humanity,  These are stories that can make excellent studies for memoir.

The tragedy of carelessness can have far-reaching repercussions that can affect many lives and tell a story from which others can learn.   Careless behavior can be the cause of accidents, personal ruin, and destructive lifestyle.  A story about carelessness should teach readers about what to avoid in their own lives and what to watch out for in the lives of those around them.   A memoir that involves carelessness hopefully takes a turn for the positive in the end, but when there is no positive outcome then some lesson should be imparted to the reader.

What kinds of carelessness can you think of that might lead to an intriguing memoir story?   Can you think of a memoir that is centered about carelessness?   Have you been a caretaker for someone who was unable to care for themselves?

Beginnings and Beliefs (Elements of Memoir) #AtoZChallenge

Memoirs can certainly cover bad things but life doesn't have to be all bad to be interesting.   Many people do like to hear the stories about the bad things that have happened to others, but hopefully there is some redemptive or uplifting aspect to it all.  That's not always the case.  It all depends on the life story you are telling and what over all message you want to convey to your readers.

Good or bad, life consists of many beginnings:  Childhood, starting school, entering a new career, or the early years of marriage are just a few examples of beginnings that a memoir can discuss.  Beginnings can tell stories that lead to success or failure.   They can describe how the memoirist got to where they eventually arrived.   Stories about how life events or situations came to be can be of tremendous interest to readers.   All beginnings should have an eventual outcome or at least some insight as to where the story might end up one day.

Life stories that relate to an author's belief system or their dubious encounter with belief that did not turn out well such as involvement and detachment from a cult can be compelling reading for many.   This topic usually has a motivation to convert, enlighten, or warn others about the belief system to which the story relates.

Bad stories can make for good reading and good stories don't have to be boring.   The mission of any memoir is to be informative but ultimately interesting.

What "B" topics weren't mentioned here?   Can you think of any memoir that fits in the category of "beliefs"?     What is a "beginning" story that you would like to read about?

Activities and Addictions (Elements of Memoir) #AtoZChallenge

One might think first of "autobiography" when thinking of memoir.  However memoir is a bit more specific.  Where an autobiography might cover an entire life, a memoir deals in parts of a life.  For example, memoir can focus on feelings, impressions, specific events, or a period of ones life.  Autobiography is more like a collection of memoir pieces compiled to create a broader life picture.

To start our alphabetical look at some of the elements or topics that can comprise memoir we will begin with activities.  What are some interesting actions or interests that you have pursued in life?    Activities will be covered in greater detail throughout our A to Z examination of memoir so we won't delve into the specifics in this first post.  This generalization is intended to get your mind working as you think about your own life activities that other people might be interested in hearing about.

When we think of the memoirs that others have written, the actions of their lives create the story that is unfolded on the pages of the memoir.  If those actions are exciting, inspiring, unique, and ultimately interesting then there is a story to tell.  As with all writing, the intrigue of the story and the engagement value for the reader depends on the style of the writer and how they make that content work.   The most exciting life can be a bore in the hands of a poor writer while mundane events can seem deeply meaningful when told by the storyteller who opens up our minds.

One theme often used by memoirists is that of addiction.  Substance abuse and harmful habits are activities that are dangerous and deadly.  An addictive activity is intriguing to most people and something that many others have faced themselves.   The addiction story can be morbidly fascinating to readers and enlightening to the curious.  How addicts lift themselves from the depths is often highly inspirational.   These stories can also be helpful to those in similar circumstances.

There are many other stories that can fit in categories that start with the letter "A".   Abuse, accidents, animal rescue or relationships, and art are some others.

What "A" topics can you add to this list?    Are there any standout memoirs in any of the "A" categories that you would recommend?    Do you have your own "A" topic memoir that you would like to mention in the comments?
