A to Z Theme 2016

For my 2016 A to Z theme I used a meme that I ran across on the blog of Bridget Straub who first saw it on the blog of Paula Acton. This meme is a natural for me to use on my memoir blog. It's an A to Z concept and it's about me. No research and nothing complicated. I'm given twenty six questions or topics to discuss that are about me.

In April I kept my posts short and uncomplicated. In the midst of it all you might learn a few things about me that you didn't previously know.

Summertime Travelling

Will you be doing any travelling this summer?  Some of us in the northern hemisphere might be hitting the road.   A few with greater financial wherewithal might even be flying to far off places or hitting the seas in cruise ships.  Travel options are many.

High gas prices and tough economic situations for some of us might curtail travel and cause more than a few to opt for staying at home if any vacation time is to be had.  Or maybe some of you work through the summer.  Since my wife is a teacher and I'm essentially retired we have a couple of free months in the summer.   Travel is on the current agenda.  If everything goes as planned we'll be packing up our Chrysler Town and Country van and visiting family scattered about the U.S. far from where we live.  If we don't go to visit them, odds are we are unlikely to see any of them during the year.  I'm not fond of scattered families, but life sometimes takes those turns as we all pursue the dreams that the economy sometimes dictates.

In weeks to come you might find me in Texas, Mississippi, Tennessee, Virginia, and New Jersey and many points in between.  The trek from Los Angeles to all of those places means a lot of time and many miles on the highways.  No telling where you might find me in the weeks ahead.   I'll be pre-scheduling my posts before I depart so I'll be writing about generalities.  A bit of the past and some guesstimates of where I might be in general at the time when the post goes up.

If you aren't travelling yourself you can join me in my travels.  In a sense that is.   I'll try to give you a feel for things that we might encounter.  We've made this trip a number of times so even with my bad memory I'm sure I'll pull up a few highlights that we've experienced on past trips that most likely we'll experience again.

Hope you don't mind if I take the easy blogging route and reminisce about the road.   Maybe we share some memories between us and maybe I'll share some that are new to you.   I hope we all have a happy safe summer.

See you next Saturday on the first leg of the journey.

What are your plans for the summer?    Do you hit the roads during the summer months?   What is your favorite travel destinations and activities?

  1. Too broke to travel and I have dog care issues as well. I am not a huge fan of summer travel b/c it's just too hot and humid. My dad & I did 3 weeks in CA in 1988 (the year b/f I moved there) and it was brutally hot. The Yosemite waterfalls were nonexistent and there were just way too many people everywhere we went. I like spring and fall travel best. But I will be taking day trips over the summer....so much to see right around here.

  2. No big trips planned this year, so it's a writing and submitting summer for me. We do have to attend a memorial with relatives in the interior of BC, and rellies will come from Saskatoon for a few days.

I would be interested in any road trip memories you want to share Lee, and will drop by if you post them. Travel stories teach us all more about other places, some we may never see. I've only made one cross country trip by car. That's a lot of driving. . .

  3. Lee-you're in AZ and you don't look me up?

    What's up with that?

Maybe you just wanted to pass through the hellish heat as swiftly as possible...

  5. My summers are busy with Dogsitting so no travels for me anytime soon. I travel vicariously through my customers. Some of them bring me back gifts from where they've been and that's always nice. I hear ya about spread out families. Likewise for me and it's not fun. We haven't all been together in over four years! Before that it was 2000. In my next life I want to come back where I have the capacity to do much pleasure traveling! Lee, if you find yourself in Austin, do get in touch. Would love to meet for a cup of coffee...

  6. JoJo-- I remember family trips in the summer when I was a child. It was all we knew at the time, but I find it difficult to fathom how we survived car travel back then without A/C.

DG -- My travels in BC are some of my fondest ever. Beautiful country throughout the province.

Larry -- One of these days I going to go to Phoenix when I can hang around a bit. We're always rushing through to get somewhere.

Liz -- I try to have my road trips planned pretty accurately.

Angelsbark-- For a while I actually used to go to Austin. One of my daughters was at the university for a few years. She's since graduated and moved to Houston so we usually don't go through Austin.

  8. Love the picture of Picacho Peak. I grew up there in Eloy Arizona and saw it every single day of my life until about age 8. Even now when I travel back to visit family I'm not truly home until I see Picacho Peak!

I don't have plans during the summer, maybe a quick weekend trip to Santa Barbara so I'll try to keep up with you and see where you're headed. Safe travels!

  9. I love to travel and am pretty sad that I don't get much time for it. I'll be content to live vicariously through your travels and, hopefully, lots of photos of beautiful places. Enjoy yourself!

  11. Susanne-- Staying home can be kind of nice.

Alicia -- Picacho Peak is always a landmark I look forward to seeing.

Lynda -- Any photos I put up probably won't be mine since I'm going to try to post in advance of my trip. Travel takes time, but it also takes up time.

Teresa-- You do have your hands full. You'll deserve a vacation next year.

  13. DEar Lee, I look forward to journeying with you via your postings. I myself will fly to Utah this summer for a vacation with a friend and her children who are very dear to me. And several friends are coming to visit me from Minnesota and so exciting times are ahead! I'm grateful that I have the money to afford to fly to Utah. Life is good. Peace.
